Obsidian Wine Co.’s Pezsgő Pinot Noir Pét-Nat is a vibrant expression of both terroir and experimentation, drawing inspiration from Hungary’s sparkling traditions while showcasing the winery’s Sonoma roots. Obsidian, known for its volcanic-influenced vineyards in Lake County and Carneros, has built its reputation on wines that emphasize a strong sense of place, particularly through the interplay of volcanic soils, sustainable viticulture, and thoughtful winemaking. With Pezsgő (the Hungarian word for sparkling wine), the estate nods to old-world heritage while crafting a distinctly modern, California-driven Pétillant Naturel.
The Pinot Noir grapes come from estate vineyards shaped by volcanic tuff and gravelly soils, which provide excellent drainage and impart a subtle mineral edge. At elevations moderated by Pacific breezes, the fruit develops bright acidity and purity, key elements for a naturally sparkling style. The winemaking follows the ancestral method: grapes are harvested by hand, fermented with native yeasts, and bottled before fermentation completes, trapping natural carbon dioxide and creating gentle effervescence without dosage or secondary fermentation. The wine is unfiltered and crown-capped, preserving a raw, authentic character.
In the glass, Pezsgő shows a hazy, ruby-tinged blush that hints at its natural, minimal-intervention origins. Aromas are lifted and playful, with wild strawberry, sour cherry, and red currant mingling with rose petals and a faint yeasty note from the lees. On the palate, it is bright and electric, driven by lively acidity and fine, spritzy bubbles. The flavors lean toward tart red fruit and cranberry, underlined by a touch of citrus peel and earthy minerality. Its texture is rustic yet refreshing, with a dry, crisp finish that invites another sip.
This Pét-Nat is best enjoyed chilled and opened with a sense of adventure, as each bottle may show subtle variation due to its natural fermentation. It shines as an aperitif or alongside charcuterie, fresh cheeses, and Mediterranean-style small plates. Light, refreshing, and just a little wild, Obsidian’s Pezsgő Pinot Noir captures the celebratory spontaneity of sparkling wine while staying grounded in terroir and tradition.
