Arillo in Terrabianca Description

The Arillo in Terrabianca Campaccio 2020 carries forward the legacy of one of Tuscany’s most emblematic Super Tuscans, born from a spirit of experimentation and redefined through a new chapter of family stewardship. Terrabianca, first established in Chianti Classico, has long been synonymous with Campaccio — a wine that since its debut in 1988 has embodied the fusion of native and international varieties. The estate is now guided by the Arillo family, who have reinvested in the land with a focus on sustainable viticulture and a renewed dedication to expressing terroir. The name “Campaccio,” taken from “campo cattivo” or “bad field,” reflects once-unyielding land transformed into a source of elegance and strength.

The 2020 vintage draws from hillside vineyards in Radda in Chianti and Maremma, planted on limestone, marl, and galestro soils that contribute depth, minerality, and freshness. The Mediterranean climate, with its hot, sun-drenched days tempered by cooling breezes from the Tyrrhenian Sea and diurnal shifts from the Apennines, yields grapes of ripe concentration balanced by natural acidity. This interplay of site and climate provides the backbone for Campaccio’s structure and age-worthiness.

The blend remains faithful to its Super Tuscan identity: Sangiovese (about 70%) married with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Grapes are hand-harvested, vinified separately in stainless steel, and then aged for 12–14 months in a mix of French oak barriques, followed by bottle refinement. The use of oak is carefully measured, intended to polish tannins and layer complexity without overwhelming varietal character.

In the glass, the 2020 vintage presents a deep ruby hue with garnet highlights. The bouquet is intense and layered, showing ripe black cherry, blackberry, and plum, alongside notes of cedar, tobacco, and Mediterranean herbs, accented by hints of cocoa and sweet spice from its time in oak. On the palate, it is full-bodied and concentrated, yet finely balanced: robust tannins softened by round fruit, lifted by bright acidity, and carried through to a long, savory finish marked by minerality and dark fruit.

This Campaccio is a natural partner for Tuscan classics such as bistecca alla fiorentina, game ragù, or aged Pecorino Toscano, but it also pairs beautifully with hearty roasts and grilled meats. Best served at 16–18°C in a generous Bordeaux-style glass, it benefits from at least an hour of decanting in its youth to allow its structure and complexity to unfold. While approachable now, the 2020 has the pedigree to evolve for 10–15 years, developing notes of dried fig, leather, and earthy spice as it matures.
